Actively seeking out a new job is a major commitment—especially in such a tough job market. As a result, many people who would like to look for new opportunities have opted to postpone their job search. However there are some less consuming job-seeking methods that can be very effective. They will allow you to continue working hard at your current job, while simultaneously bringing you closer to new opportunities. Here are some simple steps to take before embarking on a full-fledged job hunt:
1. Start making preparations. Revise your resume so that it is current and clearly depicts your professional interests. Identify some career goals, and discuss them with your friends. Talking them out will not only help you better define them; it may remind your friends that they have some good leads or relevant connections.
2. Take on new responsibilities at work. You will gain some new bullets for your resume, and you may find that changing up your routine recharges your motivation for the job. You could even find yourself up for a promotion or raise!
3. Find out what other opportunities are available at your current company. Companies love to hire internal candidates. You should check for new openings at your company at least once a month. At the very least, you may get some ideas for the kind of positions that interest you.
4. Start keeping better track of your network. People you have met both professionally and personally can be huge assets when you are trying to switch jobs. Stay in touch as much as possible, and spend some time on LinkedIn.
5. Finally, try a new activity every year. You will gain a whole new network of people with similar interests. In addition, a life outside of your job can give you a stronger sense of independence and confidence.
Once you have tackled these smaller steps, you may be ready to take on a complete job search…unless you find a job along the way!
