More Workers Voluntarily Leave than are Let Go

The Wall Street Journal reports that in early 2010, the number of workers who voluntarily left their jobs surpassed the number of those let go for the first time since October 2008. An average of 1.87 million workers voluntarily left their positions in March 2010, a decent increase from a low of 1.72 million that was hit between October 2008 and February 2010.

This figure means different things for employees and employers. Employees are finally willing to exlpore new options and seek out positions that will help move them along a particular career path. So they need to be sure that they have the means to adequately evaluate new employment opportunities and are doing all they can to present their experiences, qualifications, and skills to potential employers.

For employers, however, the outlook is not as bright. While this may mean that they have access to a larger pool of applicants, applicants who are serious about advancing their careers, they are also faced with the large amount of time and expense it can take to replace the employees who are leaving.
