Recruitment and Placement
Undergraduates Have a Tough Time Evaluating Unpaid Internships

Unpaid internships are on the rise. They have always been an option for students looking to gain some experience over the summer and bulk up their resume, but we have seen an increase in the number of unpaid internships in recent years. However, The New York Times reports that the legality of such internships may be in question.

This poses quite the dilemma for many undergraduates. Because so many internships are unpaid, students often cannot afford to accept an offer and opt to search for paid work instead. However, they then feel they are missing out on valuable work experience, as well as the opportunity to strengthen their resumes. And what about the students who do accept an unpaid internship? The New York Times article reports that these students often find that, at the end of the summer, they are more familiar with the filing cabinet and the photocopier than the ins-and-outs of the industry in which they worked.

When students are ambitious enough to devote their entire summer to an internship program, they want and expect results. Even if they are not paid, they at least want to head back to school with three months' worth of solid work experience and a feeling of preparedness for their eventual entry into the work force. With your help, students will be better able to convey their experiences to potential employers, even if they were not able to take on a summer internship in their field of study. So what steps can your office take to help students make the most of their experiences?
OneWire's Solution
Use OneWire Campus Pro to Help your Students Map Out Their Work Experience

Helping your students create their resumes and career profiles is the first step to helping them land internships or full-time jobs. Creating a profile on OneWire is one of the best and easiest ways for your students to track all their experiences and accomplishments in a single, organized application. Most employers expect that graduating seniors will have little to no work experience as compared to their educational experiences. That is why the OneWire candidate profile page asks for as much detail in the Education section as it does in the Experience section.

Under the Education tab, students can add detail surrounding their entire experience at their college or university, from Degrees & Fields of Study and Scholarships to Clubs & Organizations and Study Abroad Experiences. They can even add information about their High School and any Board Tests they have taken.

Any work experience should be added under the Experience tab, no matter the type of position or employer. And skills, interests, and hobbies should be added under the Skills & Interests tab. Students can even upload a resume or include their LinkedIn profile information. The combination of all these details provides hiring managers with all the information they need to make their decisions - and OneWire presents it to them in a clean and concise manner, all in one place. This will help your students land the internships and jobs that are right for them.
