Unemployment Unchanged: Is this Positive or Negative?
On March 5, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the unemployment rate for February 2010 is 9.7 percent - showing no change from January.
The New York Times
reports that although the unemployment rate held steady for the first
two months of the year, many economists are optimistic that a recovery
is on its way.
For example, the 36,000 jobs lost in February may
seem like an extremely large amount, until you compare that figure with
the estimated 650,000 jobs lost monthly about a year ago. In fact, even
the co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research is
seeing signs of economic recovery, saying, "It's much better than it
had been looking."
Many experts believe the economy will
continue to grow throughout the spring as employers create more jobs
and increase hiring. This means good things for the candidates out
there - and good things for your candidate pool.
A major
contributing factor to the unemployment rate is the number of job
seekers who have left the workforce entirely by abandoning their job
searches altogether, many of them qualified candidates. Now that jobs
are beginning to return, candidates may be less frustrated with the job
search process. As they regain a more positive outlook and return to
the workforce, your candidate pool will grow.

Recruitment
Increase Candidate Satisfaction
In
most Human Resources and Recruiting departments, much thought is given
to recruitment processes and practices. From how candidates apply and
are reviewed to how the interview and on-boarding processes are
conducted, almost all the details are mapped out. But how much thought
is given to how the candidate perceives the recruitment process?
A recent ERE.net article
claims that more than 70 percent of applicants take issue with some
aspect of the recruiting process. This figure may seem surprising, but
it actually does make some sense: depending on the position, applicants
may spend a significant amount of valuable time filling out
applications, updating their resumes, preparing for interviews, and
then waiting for hiring managers to contact them.
Although HR
departments are certainly busy, this process creates little room for
open communication between the candidate and hiring manager, which may
leave the candidate confused or dissatisfied with his or her experience.
One company that is doing it right? Zappos.com.
Under the leadership of CEO Tony Hsieh,
the entire company helped put together a list of the company's core
values, which were then incorporated into the interview process as a
way to gauge a candidate's fit within the corporate culture. As a
result, Zappos conducts interviews that are enjoyable and involve many
employees, opening the lines of communication and helping improve
candidate satisfaction.

projects. It also provides you with the number of candidates who have
Expressed Interest in your firm and the number of your internal
candidates on OneWire.
-Projects page redesign:
you will gain easier access into every aspect of all your projects. On
this page, you will also find high-level insight into your project
activity, as well as new in-sourcing and archiving functionalities.
