Use your Education to Get Ahead

No Matter your Graduation Date, your Education is Important

When you started looking for your first job out of school, you probably highlighted your education more than anything else. But as you moved forward in your career – and used up more and more space on your resume – you probably shifted your emphasis to other areas, like skills and experiences.

At OneWire, we know that hiring managers consider education a critical factor when making hiring decisions, so we encourage you to fill in your education information before moving on to other sections of your OneWire profile.

No matter your graduation date, you should not overlook the education section of your profile. Including your education details will set you apart from other candidates and will help match you to those opportunities for which hiring managers seek your precise background. However, your graduation date can help you determine which details are most important to include in your profile.

How to Fill in the Education Tab…

If you are an undergraduate or recent graduate

You should provide as much detail as you can in the Education tab. You may not have much work experience yet, so your education may help you stand out among other candidates. From your college or university to high school to board tests, you should fill in all three sections as completely as you can.

If you graduated five to 10 years ago

Your education is still important, but you probably no longer need to rely on it to land your next job. If you can complete every section in the Education tab, we encourage you to do so. But at the very least, you should focus on your Degrees & Fields of Study, Graduation Year, GPAs, Scholarships, and Board Tests.

If you graduated more than 10 years ago
Although your education may not be the first thing a hiring manager looks for, you should not leave it out of your profile entirely. It could be the one thing that establishes a strong connection between you and the hiring manager. Again, if you can fill in the Education tab completely, you should. At a minimum, we encourage you to fill in your Degrees & Fields of Study and Graduation Year.

Following the above suggestions will help you give hiring managers the precise information they need – and will help precisely match you to new opportunities.
