Continued Improvement in Unemployment Report

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest Employment Situation Summary on Feb. 5, and the outlook is encouraging. The unemployment rate fell to 9.7 percent in January from 10 percent in December, and the number of unemployed persons decreased to 14.8 million.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report reinforces the growing optimism. While there are still more than 11 million people receiving unemployment benefits (about half of whom are receiving traditional unemployment benefits, with the other half receiving federal extended unemployment benefits), the overall trend shows a steady decline in both initial and continued unemployment claims.

There are definite signs that the economy is improving, and people expect the employment situation to improve at the same rate. However, we recommend that the job seekers out there take this news with tempered enthusiasm. Typically, jobs are the last part of the economy to bounce back after a recession.

"The natural lag in employment is that companies need to have profits and need to see an improvement in their top-line growth before they make the commitment to actually hiring," says Diane Swonk, an economist with Mesirow Financial, in an interview with National Public Radio.

T-Shaped Stars: People with Depth and Breadth

IDEO, the world's leading design and strategy firm, is known for the innovative products it develops. The source of their success? The dynamic, creative, and collaborative people who work there.

IDEO CEO Tim Brown discusses the company's approach to talent management in an interview with Morten T. Hansen in a recent article in ChiefExectuve.net.

IDEO hires T-shaped people; that is, people who have a depth of skill (the vertical stroke of the T) and a breadth of interest (the horizontal stroke).

While it is important for an individual to have depth - mastery or expertise in a given field - it is equally important for an individual to have breadth. Breadth comprises two things. The first is empathy, which allows people to see things from another's point of view. The second is interest and enthusiasm in another's discipline.

To read more about how T-shaped individuals impact IDEO's culture, read the article here.

Finding T-shaped people can be a challenge and can require significant time and energy. However, OneWire makes it easy to find the people with the depth of experience you need in your firm. Identifying breadth is more challenging and requires several rounds of interviews. The good news is that you can conveniently track all interview notes with OneWire.

Campus Recruiting: Finding Candidates You Really Want

Firms invest significant resources into their campus recruiting programs. However, are they making the most of their investment?

Kevin Wheeler, Chairman and Founder of The Future of Talent Institute, explores campus recruiting in his ere.net article, "40 Elements to a 21st Century College Recruiting Program."

Some highlights include:

4. Key schools are becoming less important. Focus is now on finding people with the "key skills and traits" that you are looking for.

10. You make an effort to identify and attract students who are not actively seeking a job in your organization. You have a variety of activities and online campaigns to entice and attract the students you want.

36. You have a shorter cycle time and lower costs than your competitors and you have figured out how to get that information.

39. Paper is virtually eliminated. Forms, policies, interview results, and applicant tracking are all online and available electronically.

OneWire addresses all of these issues with its new Campus Pro tool. Schools are signing up to use this tool to manage their campus recruiting for the Fall 2010 season. Campus Pro merges seamlessly with your current OneWire experience and allows you to manage both campus and lateral recruiting with a single tool.
