Today's Candidate Pool: A Benefit and a Challenge

The U.S. unemployment rate has hit its highest level in 26 years: 10.2 percent for October 2009, the government reported on Nov. 6. This means nearly 16 million Americans are out of work.

For hiring managers in the hard-hit industry of financial services, the sheer number of finance professionals now searching for new opportunities can be both an advantage and a disadvantage.

The advantage: hiring managers today have an unprecedented pool of talented individuals from which to hire new employees.

The disadvantage: firms are inundated with hundreds of resumes, none of which may actually be from candidates who match their exact hiring search criteria. Read more on our blog.

So how can hiring managers cut through the resume clutter to find and hire precisely the right candidates for their open positions - quickly and easily?

OneWire Chairman Skiddy von Stade addresses this question and more in his interview with Jobs Portal Watch.

Did you know that nearly two-thirds of hiring managers later regret their hiring decisions? Think about it. Have you made any hires that you regretted later?

The fact is, one bad hire can be a tremendous blow to your business. That is why calculating hiring failures is just as important - or even more important - than calculating hiring success.

Recent statistics say only one out of five hires can be classified as unequivocal successes. Clearly, the hiring process could improve. But how? What is the best way to calculate hiring failure or success?

You can start by defining what success and failure mean to you - then fine tuning your hiring process in a number of ways.

OneWire Advice
Tips for Successful Searches on OneWire

1. Prioritize your search criteria. After you enter your criteria, click on the Weights tab to adjust the relative importance of all your criteria. Use the stars to adjust criteria within a category; use the sliders to adjust the categories. This will help you hone in on the precise candidates you seek.

2. Run your scoring frequently. This is important, especially right after you prioritize your criteria. It will show you whether you should expand or narrow down your search.

3. Adjust the match floor. The match floor box, located in the top right corner of your dashboard, allows you to control the number of candidates confidentially matched to your criteria. When you allow more matches, more individuals potentially see your opportunity and can refer friends for it. When you limit matches, you only see candidates whose skills and experiences most closely match your criteria.
